Sustainable New Year Resolutions

You probably have heard that most New Year’s resolutions do not even survive January, so why even bother with it in the first place? In fact, while a study showed that only 46% followed-through with their resolutions, people who didn’t take a resolution had only a 4% success rate in achieving their goal.

Have you made a New Year's resolution before, only to give up on it a few weeks later? You are not alone - studies show that a majority of resolutions fail, with only about 46% of people following through on their goals. But before you write off New Year's resolutions as a waste of time, consider this: people who do not make resolutions at all have an even lower success rate of achieving their goals, at just 4%.

So, if you are determined to make positive changes in your life, setting a resolution can actually increase your chances of success. Here are a few New Year's resolutions that can help you save money and reduce your environmental impact in 2023:

  1. Fix rather than replace. Replacing something in your household means spending money on something new, while creating additional waste. Instead, commit this year to fixing electronics, appliances, clothes, etc. and take preventative steps to keep them in good condition for longer. 2. Reduce your water use. Fix leaky faucets, take shorter showers, and use drought-resistan native plants in your landscaping. This can save you money on your water bill and help conserve a valuable resource.

  3. Use reusable bags, containers, and water bottles. Single-use plastics contribute to pollution and waste. By using reusable items, you can reduce your environmental impact and save money on buying disposable items.

  4. Shop secondhand. Buying used items can save you money and reduce waste. Look for gently used clothing, furniture, and household items at thrift stores, garage sales, and online marketplaces.

  5. Eat less meat. Meat production has a larger environmental impact than plant-based foods. By reducing your meat consumption, you can save money on groceries and reduce your carbon footprint

  6. Walk, bike, or use public transportation. Using alternative modes of transportation can save you money on gas and car maintenance, and it is better for the environment

  7. Reduce your waste. Recycle and compost to reduce the amount of waste you create. You can also look for products with minimal packaging and avoid using single-use items.

By making these types of resolutions, you can save money and reduce your environmental impact in the new year. But how can you make sure your resolution sticks? Here are a few tips:

  1. Set specific, achievable goals. Rather than resolving to "lose weight" or "save money," be specific about what you want to accomplish. For example, "exercise for 30 minutes three times a week" or "save $50 per month." This makes your goal more concrete and easier to track.

  2. Make a plan. Decide how you will achieve your goal and create a step-by-step plan. This can include things like scheduling exercise sessions or setting up a budget.

  3. Track your progress. Keep a record of your progress, whether it's a simple notebook or a digital app. Seeing the progress you've made can be a great motivator to keep going

  4. Find an accountability partner. Share your resolution with a friend or family member and check in with them regularly. Having someone to support and encourage you can make a big difference.

  5. Do not beat yourself up if you slip up. It's normal to have setbacks, and the important thing is to get back on track as soon as possible. Don't let one misstep discourage you from achieving your goal.
