How to pick the perfect phone

Maybe the latest iPhone ad got you or maybe it was your colleague boasting about the features of her new phone, or you’ve run out of storage, either way: you’ve decided it’s time to get a new phone. But what phone should you get? And how to make sure you get the best deal? We’re here to help.

Before you run off to the next store and buy the first phone that catches your eye, start by making a list of the features you need. Be it a top-notch camera, extra long battery life, a larger screen, a compact device, preference for Apple or Android, or still something else, make sure you know your priorities before starting to look for suitable candidates.

Now you might think, “I’ve always had an iPhone, I’ll just get the newest model and be done with it”, but even if you’re not concerned with weighing the standard against the pro, pro max, or mini versions, you still need to decide how much memory you need. And we recommend you also take a peek at older versions. You can probably save at least $100 by opting for the second-newest model, which might even be lighter, or have a better battery life. One thing you don’t need to worry about is the color or even paying extra for a limited edition color: you are going to want to put a case on it anyway.

Next, decide what your budget is. Are you willing to shell out $1’000 for a flagship phone? Can you get trade-in value for your current phone? Are you locked into a contract with your carrier?

Generally speaking, getting a new phone when it’s first released is going to cost you. Apart from having to stand in line, maybe even camping out overnight, you are set to pay the highest possible price for your new device. For Apple, you can expect to save 10% if you’re willing to wait just two months, for Samsung, you can save around 20% over the same time period, according to this article. For Samsung, the price reductions start to flatten out after about 6 months, when you can often expect about 40% off the original price.

Once you have made up your mind, or even better, have a shortlist of 2-3 models you are interested in, you can start looking for the best deal. There is no single place that will always have the best price, so you will need to do your research. Don’t forget to check out refurbished options from the manufacturer: they might come with the same warranty as a new phone and can easily save you 10-15%. Take your time with this, especially if your current phone is still working: every week there will be new deals and offers on your model of choice, and waiting can literally pay off.

Should you really invest all this time in finding your new phone? We think so: you’ll be picking up your phone 344 times, using it for close to 3 hours total every day.
