Forgot your charger? No problem!

While we spent the past decades collecting chargers with every new device, we still end up without one surprisingly often. But is it safe to use your laptop charger to power your phone? Is it enough if the plug looks the same? Using the wrong charger can not only damage your battery but will often also void the manufacturer’s warranty. Do not run to buy another charger just yet, we will explain in this article what you need to watch out for to reduce the extra cables you need (and ways to get your device charged, the next time you find yourself on the road without a charger).

There are really only two numbers you need to check: Volt, indicated with a “V” and Ampere, indicated with an “A”. If they align and the plug fits the socket, you are good to go. You will usually find the numbers on a label on or near the battery of your device. They can be hard to read, but if you take a picture of the label with your phone under good lighting, you can easily zoom in and identify the numbers.

Next, check the label on your adapter. Many adapters actually support a range, so you just need to make sure that the range indicated for “output” aligns with what your battery requires.

While it might seem tempting to put an end to the wires altogether, switching to wireless charging for compatible devices is a much less efficient process that will require up to 50% more energy. The energy lost in the wireless charging process turns into unwanted heat, which can reduce the performance of your battery over time (read here on how to take care of your batteries). So both to preserve your battery and to avoid wasting scarce electricity, we recommend you stick to the cable.

Finding a phone charger on the go

If you left for a trip and realized you forgot to bring a charger: don’t sweat it. We have put together a list of options that keep you powered up, without having to run out and buy an extra charger.

  1. Borrow a charger. Ask a friend or colleague, often someone has a charger they can at least lend you for a bit.

  2. Charge it via a USB port. If you just didn’t bring the wall adapter, but you have the USB cable, you can charge your phone using any USB port. If your hotel room does not have a special USB-outlet, check any electronics in the room: many TVs have an USB port, for example.

  3. Find a wireless charging pad. Most new phones have the ability to charge wirelessly and while it is not the most efficient, nor sustainable approach, you do not have to worry about compatibility. Spots where you are likely to find wireless charging pads: restaurants, cafes, and hotels. You can also download the app “Aircharge” to look for locations.

  4. Ask at the lost & found of a hotel or café. It is likely that someone left theirs behind, and you might be able to borrow it, especially if it has been unclaimed for some time.

  5. Buy a new cable. If everything else fails, you might have to buy at least the cable. If you can live without the wall adaptor until you are back home, we recommend this approach because it is cheaper, less bulky, and does not leave you with an extra adaptor you do not need. Pro tip: keep the extra cable in your bag, to avoid a similar situation in the future.
