People in the US check their phones 344 times a day: that’s a chance to drop it every 4 minutes. While manufacturers have introduced increasingly stronger glass, modern smartphones remain more fragile than the hammer-like Nokia 3310. A case, especially a sustainable one, remains a great option to extend your smartphone’s lifetime and may even offer some useful additional features.
With manufacturers advertising stronger and stronger glass displays, users might start to wonder, whether a case is still worth it. Savvee looked into it and put together five reasons why it still makes sense to get one.
Reason #1: save money.
A case will help prevent everything from a simple scratch to a broken screen or worse. That reduces the chance that you will have to pay for repairs (usually at least a co-pay with your extended warranty or insurance) or need to get a replacement phone. Keeping your phone dent-free also preserves its resale value, so when you decide you want to get a new phone, you can get more money for your old one by selling it or trading it in.
Scenario 1: You buy a phone for $800 and don't use a case. It will likely last you less than two years (most people crack their screen within 3 months without a case) and you end up spending an average of $400 per year on your phone.
Scenario 2: You buy a phone for $800 and invest in a case (starting from as low as $10). The phone may now last up to 4 years, and you are more likely to preserve its resale-value or ability to trade it in for up to $200. As a result, you only spend less than $200 per year, what a steal!
Reason #2: do good.
You might think that adding a plastic cover will automatically generate unwanted plastic waste, but it doesn’t have to. There are great options that use recovered ocean plastic or biodegradable materials. Others recycle old cases for you, from any brand.
Still, you might be concerned about using an additional piece of equipment, even if sustainably produced, but if this little extra allows you to keep your phone significantly longer, the overall ecological impact will be positive.
Reason #3: gain features.
A case often offers more than just protection: from getting a better grip, to replacing your entire wallet (full-scale or minimal), there are plenty of practical benefits from adding a case to your phone. Some options even make your phone (more) waterproof, or include a stand to prop it up. If you need more energy, a battery case might be a good option for you, but make sure you recycle it properly when you no longer need it. Our advice on phone batteries is available here.
Reason #4: look good.
If you go for a cover, you might as well go for one reflecting your style, helping you make sure you pick up your own phone every time. Whether you prefer a polished look with (vegan) leather or wood, or an activist style featuring your favorite cause, your options to stand out or blend in are unlimited. And if all else fails, you can even personalize the case. There are many services, including local stores near you, where you can also support a local business.
Reason #5: upgrade affordably.
A new phone case, especially with a nice look or with a new feature, may give you the sensation of an upgrade for a fraction of the price of a new phone. While there is no need to change your case every day, there is also no reason not to mix it up after a while. It’s definitely more convenient to exchange a case than having to set up an entirely new phone.
Savvee wants you to get the most out of your things, and a case might be one of the most obvious choices to achieve that outcome for your phone. Another way is downloading the Savvee app for iOS or Android to help you keep tabs on your durable goods.
